10 years of arbitration

The first seeds of our arbitration practice were sown in 2011. This was thanks to Estonia adopting legislation that had a retroactive effect on foreign investors, who were interested in the possibility of bringing claims against the state.

In the ensuing years, we started receiving more work from parties seeking to enforce arbitral awards in Estonia and further afield, leading the firm to develop a specialisation in the area. Throughout the years, we have become the go-to team for many in ICSID disputes, acting as local co-counsel through international firms.

A recognised track record

Our recent experience includes, for example:

  • As co-counsel with Jones Day, representing glass manufacturer Windoor on an ICSID claim against Kazakhstan, seeking over USD 30 million over the state’s alleged failure to pay for work on a new business and conference centre in its capital.
  • Advising on a potential ICSID claim against Lithuania in which a foreign investor is seeking over EUR 56 million.
  • Defending a global manufacturer of mining and construction equipment against a supplier’s claim for EUR 20 million in losses in Belarus.
  • We recently scored a win for an IT-solutions client in a long-running dispute related to a software development contract.
