The Commission finds that an arbitration award ordering Spain to pay compensation in favour of Antin is illegal and incompatible with state aid

The European Commission has concluded that an arbitration award, in which Spain is ordered to compensate Antin for modifying a renewable electricity support measure, constitutes illegal State aid. The Commission considered that the arbitration award, and in any event, its implementation, payment, or execution, constitutes State aid within the meaning of Article 107(1) of TFEU, which is prohibited unless it is approved by the Commission as compatible with the functioning of the internal market.

The Commission sends preliminary findings to Alphabet under the Digital Markets Act

The European Commission has sent two sets of preliminary findings to Alphabet for failing to comply with the Digital Markets Act regarding two services for which it has been designated as a gatekeeper. Firstly, the Commission has informed Alphabet that certain features and functionalities of Google Search treat Alphabet’s services more favourably than those of rival ones. In addition, the Commission found that its app marketplace, Google Play, does not comply with the DMA, as app developers are prevented from freely steering consumers to other channels for better offers.

The Commission will invest €1.3 billion in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital skills

The Commission will allocate €1.3 billion for the deployment of critical technologies that are strategically important for the continent’s tech sovereignty through the Digital Europe Programme work programme for 2025 to 2027. The work programme focuses on the deployment of AI  and its uptake by businesses and public administration, cloud and data, cyber resilience and digital skills.

The Commission provides guidance under the Digital Markets Act to facilitate the development of innovative products on Apple’s platforms

The Commission has adopted two decisions under the Digital Markets Act specifying the measures that Apple has to take to comply with certain aspects of its interoperability obligation. The first set of measures concerns nine iOS connectivity features, which will grant device manufacturers and app developers improved access to iPhone features that interact with such devices, faster data transfers and easier device set-up. The second set of measures enhances the transparency and effectiveness of Apple’s process for developers interested in obtaining interoperability with iPhone and iPad features.

Commission and national authorities take action to protect children from harmful practices in video games

The Consumer Protection Cooperation Network has launched an enforcement action against Star Stable Entertainment AB to ensure a safer, more transparent experience for players of the Star Stable Online game. In addition, the CPC Network has presented key principles to help the gaming industry comply with the EU consumer protection rules related to in-game virtual currencies, including clear and transparent pricing and pre-contractual information and respect of consumers’ right to withdraw.

Commission launches helpdesk to support EU SMEs comply with sanctions

The European Commission has launched a new help service, which supports European small and medium-sized enterprises in navigating the complex landscape of sanctions compliance. The Helpdesk will provide personalised support to EU SMEs performing sanctions due diligence checks at no cost to the companies.
