Members of the Estonian Parliament are getting ready for Launching of the Conference on the Future of Europe. In this process we must remember a few key points about the EU.
The EU is unique by nature, sui generis, of its own kind, in a class by itself. We should not struggle trying to force it into forms more common to the nation states, traditional forms of government or separation/distribution of powers as discussed by political philosopher Baron de Montesquieu in 1748 De l’esprit des loix. We should embrace the wisdom of the existing mechanisms which create a delicate balance between different interests, values and styles involved in making Europe work. […]
